Safety Message From LUSD School Board

Sent on behalf of George Neely, Board of Education President

Good Morning,

Our hearts go out to families of Parkland, Florida for the abhorrent school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School.  We grieve for the shooting victims and we mourn for the loss of innocent life.   It is hard to comprehend what the community is going through but we must always keep in mind that this could happen anywhere, even in our community.

This tragedy serves to remind us, once again, of the need to protect our children every moment of every day. It reminds us that we too can be the victims of a deranged person, and that we might be the only thing that stands between a violent intruder at school and our children. It also reminds us that our absolute number one priority as parents and educators is to protect the safety of our most precious charge, the children.

I’ve spoken many times about the importance of student achievement in our schools, however, I want to be clear that everything else pales in importance when compared to the safety of our students.  The number one priority of every employee, every volunteer, and anyone that steps on a Lodi Unified campus is always the safety our children and the people who serve our children.

Lodi Unified has worked to increase the physical security of our campuses with fencing and limited access points.  Soon, we will be upgrading classroom locks as well.  We have also evaluated and enhanced our safety and emergency procedures.  If you have any suggestions on how to better secure our schools, please bring those to the attention of your site supervisor.  We want to do all we can to provide a safe environment for everyone that works at or uses Lodi Unified facilities.

Finally, on behalf of the Board of Education, I want to thank you all for everything you do on daily basis to protect the safety of everyone at our schools.  It is you that will keep our schools and our people safe.  You are most important part of any safety plan.

George Neely
